Akbar Besanjide known as Akbar Taj-Abadi introduced Akbari pistachio cultivar as a new pistachio variety during 1950-60 in Taj-Abad village located in Rafsanjan. He passed away in 2000 (God bless him).
Akbari cultivar has the highest commercial value among Iranian pistachio cultivars. Furthermore, the highest 100-nut weight value is related to super long pistachios with 142.7 g., resulting in having large-sized marketable nuts. With having a greater salt-tolerance compared to Kale Ghouchi or Fandoghi, Akbari has the potential to cultivate in strict farmlands. Desirable characteristics including having well-formed elongated shape nuts that are easily separated from shells; large and flavorful kernel, make Akbari demanding pistachio cultivar throughout the world.
In Akbari, alternate bearing severity is high severity but it has a heavy yield potential. Appearances indicate Akbari’s high susceptibility to plant diseases in specifically the psyllid of pistachio trees and causes defoliation. Also, Akbari seems more sensitive to the applied drought stress.
This cultivar has medium tree vigor and spreading growth habit. In another word, it is medium in height but the width of the tree canopy high. It presents stronger apical dominance compared to Ahmad Aghaei but weaker than Fandoghi. A comparison between Akbari and Ahmad Aghaei shows that the longitudinal growth in current-year shoots is faster for Akbari. In the following, internodes length is shorter and branches are thicker for Akbari. Furthermore, Akbari has more stretched and bigger flower buds than is observed for Ahmad Aghaei.
This cultivar has medium tree vigor and spreading growth habit. Indeed, it presents weak apical dominance compared to Fandoghi or Akbari cultivars. A comparison between Ahmad Aghaei and Akbari shows that the longitudinal growth in current-year shoots is slower for Ahmad Aghaei (long pistachio). In the following, internodes length is longer and branches are thinner for Ahmad Aghaei. Furthermore, the Iranian long pistachio has more spherical and smaller flower buds than is observed for Akbari.
Beginning to bloom, under Rafsanjan’s condition, is on 10 April and the full bloom stage is on 15 April. Indeed, among Iranian commercial pistachio varieties, it seems to be the most late-flowering cultivar. Consequently, the risk for spring frost damage is lower than the other cultivars. Overall, the blooming stage in Akbari variety lasts for 11 days.
Akbari produces a higher number of four-leaflet and five-leaflet compound leaves than Ahmad Aghaei ones. Besides, leaf size is larger and petioles length is longer than those in Akbari. It has a flattened spear-shaped terminal leaflet which is bigger than lateral leaflets.
The maturity date of super long pistachios is on 30 June and the ripening time is on 21 September that shows it is one of the latest-maturing varieties. The outer surface of the pistachio kernel is purple-brown in color and the inner section is light yellow.
Akbari pistachio is a recognized Iranian pistachio cultivar globally, therefore it is the first choice of many people like Arabian consumers. Taher as Iran’s premier pistachio supplier, export raw in bulk super long pistachio cultivar to many countries by achieving agricultural marketing standards.
