Worldwide pistachio trade

According to the latest statistics released by the World Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) affiliated to the United Nations, the pistachio production in the world stood at 771,500 metric tons (MTs) in 2018.  In the marketing year of 2018/2019, the volume of in-shell pistachios exported from Iran amounted to approximately 250 thousand metric tons.

Iran, as one of the pistachio producers in the world

Iran is among the leading countries that produce pistachio nuts. It is an important agricultural export product in Iran. Because of its effect on exchange, employment and added value, this crop is very important in economy.

According to the FAO, statistics of Iran pistachio export is shown in Figure 2.

In 2018, the global production of pistachios was about 1.4 million tons, with Iran and the United States as leading producers, together accounting for 72% of the total. Secondary exporters were China, Germany and Netherlands. Figure 5 shows export value of major pistachio exporter countries. Data implies that highest pistachio value is obtained by Iran after the USA.

Exporting agricultural products and its success, is a complicated set that is possible with the company and coordination of various organizations. In 2018, the pistachio gardens in Iran occupies a total area of 825286 hectares.
